It's incredible how a small idea can blossom into something truly special. Mighty Crowns is grounded in the belief that we all bear the responsibility to make a meaningful difference in our community and within ourselves, and it all begins with our crown.

As a black girl, I vividly recall wanting to get my hair done professionally from a young age, a desire hindered by my mother's financial constraints. Juggling work, my grandmother took charge of getting me ready for school, struggling with my hair, and resorting to perming it – a black girl's worst nightmare. My natural hair journey started at 12 years old, guided by my mother's principle of making do with what you have. This mindset led me to become a high school hairstylist, initially a side hustle that turned into a passion. As a hairstylist today, I constantly hear my clients complain about how they never know how to do their natural hair or maintain it.  Hairdressing, for me, became a creative outlet and a means of self-expression. It fueled my desire for everyone in our communities to embrace their 'crowns', regardless of societal standards.

Since our establishment in August 2023, we have taken pride in witnessing the positive impact of our activities on the community and beyond. From these events, I recognized the potential to make a difference and impact the youth while addressing my own childhood struggles. Collaborating with four DC public schools and a homeless shelter, we've provided hair services, fostering confidence.
